Bottled Water: Is it really Pure?

Nevermind the ads and hype, is bottled water actually safer than tap water? The facts: NO! In fact, laws
regulating the purity of tap water are far more stringent than for bottled water. Tap water is regulated by
the EPA. Bottled water is merely regulated by the Food and Drug Administration which is generally under-
funded and short-staffed. As a result, the FDA has a poor record of protecting consumer health and safety.
The FDA only sends inspectors to bottling plants once every two to three years.

Besides, in recent years, nearly 50 percent of all bottled water came from city tap water supplies anyway.
As of 2010, just 3 companies give the same amount of information on their bottled water as is available to
the public on tap water . This means water source, treatment and water quality test results.

Recent independent testing of bottled water conducted by an Environmental Working Group in the USA found 38
chemical pollutants with an average of 8 in each of 10 popular brands of bottled water, purchased from
grocery stores and other retailers in 9 US states. Bottled water brands in other countries would be
similar. Including New Zealand and Australia.
So what can you do about it? Change your habits away from drinking bottled water. Carry your own bottle.
Glass, or stainless steel bottles are the best alernatives to plastic bottles. And tell your friends!
